I recently lost my eldest dog, and though I have other pets to love and care for, none of them can compare. Every relationship is unique, and each loss leaves a deep, and painful emptiness that can never be filled by another. I can’t think of anything worse than the assumption, that seeing other dogs in need will somehow help me deal with my loss. It’s like when your parents tell you to eat all your dinner because there are starving children in the world! Or worse, when it’s implied that there’s an available slot to be filled, like you’re sorry someone took their favourite toy, but it’s ok, because you’ll buy them a new one! It doesn’t work like that!

The single most important thing a grieving owner wants/needs to hear, is for others to acknowledge the signficance of their loss, and understand they’re in immense pain. That’s it! Not “(s)he’s in a better place” or “it’ll get easier with time”. These types of comments are dismissive, rather than reassuring. If in doubt – just say you’re sorry!
