Happy Thanksgiving to all the Moms with MS out there. Hope you and your family have a warm, filling and thankful day.
Just had my first MRI. Neurologist wants to do spinal tap asap. Have skin sensitivity, memory issues, massive fatigue. Not sure what the next steps are. Just would like to become as educated as possible. Tips, suggestions, advice is all welcome.
Hi Erika!!
Please feel free to join the community,we have lots of moms there who are happy to talk about their experience and we all remember how scary diagnosis can be…
The community is at:http://www.MomsWithMS.com or you can click the “Let me In”link above.
I think the beginning tests,in my opinion, are the worse part of the whole “MS”world, once you have a diagnosis you kind of learn more and more along the way but it’s not as traumatic for the most part as the first few days/weeks.
For me,as far as spinal tap,I recommend following the directions to LAY DOWN for like,a day if possible to heal. I was a college junior when I was going through this, did not listen, went to class, and got a spinal headache. If I’m remembering right I think my doctor told me to drink a coke too, maybe something about that helps? Ask your doc I don’t know,I could be remembering things wrong about the coke but DEFINITELY lay down.
The Spinal Headache (which is what I got) is totally lame, but it goes away. Also it’s not that common,I believe I got it because they had thought I had a stroke which meant I was on blood thinners hence the slow healing time for the small hole from the spinal tap.
Other than that,I wish I hadn’t seen the needle. I am sure everyone is different but for me,I wish I didn’t see it.
Over all,it did not hurt much,it was like any other shot except for the psychological knowing it’s a ‘spinal tap’which sounds so scary. I did it without anesthesia, which was totally fine and in face I believe hurt less as the numbing stuff stings like a bee sting til it’s actually working, they use the same numbing stuff they use for any other kind of surgery that you may have ever had too…
Also if you want your picture to show up on these comments you can register your email with a picture at http://www.gravatar.com/
You’ll be ok,just try not to worry too much, this hard part will be over soon,I have only had one spinal tap and most likely will never have another one unless some other big dramatic thing happens.
Sending you lots of love and positive wishes!! There’s now 600+ moms in the community so there really is support there if you need it,I will add some picture/images linking to it on this page too.
Big hug from Seattle!! –Kristin
My wife told me about your website yesterday and I had time today to visit. Good job. Easy, readable, succinct and more. I too have MS and a blog. (http://mgerber.blogspot.com)I sometimes write about kids,MS and mostly about life, gratitude and perspective. Although when my kids were born I wrote about eating children. Some of those are on my blog.
Obviously I am not a mother but am a ‘mother’of a father.(Kids now 28 and 26)and I have always loved mom’s. With your permission,I would like to be a subscriber to your blog and maybe even comment from time to time.
Be good. Be well. Be happy.
Michael
